The\u00a0photo-documentary exhibition Last Witnesses, remembering Italian fascist concentration camps for civilians, hosting as part of Rijeka 2020<\/a> program has achieved its purpose: raising awareness of the existence of\u00a0 Mussolini fascist camps. Addressing the audience are the few living witnesses of the internment from Slovenia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

An Intimate Photo-Documentary Exhibition\u00a0The Last Witnesses, Memories of Internment in Italian Fascist Camps<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0, together with the exhibition\u00a0Fabrics of Resistance: Voices of Women<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0at the Gallery Principij in Rijeka, opened a historical, social and political\u00a0perspective\u00a0and contextualisation of fascism, human rights violation and culture of remembrance in Croatia, Europe and worldwide.<\/p>\n

Common to all involved is the need to develop a culture of remembrance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The exhibition, in which\u00a0Mance Juvan<\/a>‘s photographs\u00a0capture former internees from Slovenia evoked the need\u00a0 to preserve the historical memory of citizens of Croatia.<\/span><\/p>\n

In support of culture of remembrance, witnesses of the internment attended the opening of the exhibition in September 2019: long-time president of the Rab – Gonars Camps Committee in Slovenia\u00a0Herman Janez <\/strong>and\u00a0\u00a0a retired Croatian lawyer who was born in internment in Kampor on island of Rab,\u00a0Ivan Zba\u0161nik, <\/strong>who is\u00a0<\/strong>one out of 9 newborns who survived the internment on island of Rab and in Gonars.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It turns out that the memory of the internment of Croats in the camps of Mussolini’s Italy is almost completely lost.<\/span>\u00a0Therefore\u00a0requires a reflection on fascism and its rule in the Rijeka area from the 1920s until the capitulation of Italy and wider since the majority of todays Croatian coast was under Italian rule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition\u00a0space of the Principij Gallery, located in the heart of the city of Rijeka, was visited by elementary school students, high school students, teaching staff and professors, as well as the general public.<\/span>\u00a0The opening and closing event was attended by Herman Jane\u017e Jr., Janez Mar\u0161i\u010d and Du\u0161an Zamida, who jointly chair the Rab – Gonars Camps Committee.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The\u00a0visitors were pleased to be able to read about this poorly\u00a0 known part of WWII history in several languages.<\/span>\u00a0The exhibition Last Witnesses, co-authored by Sa\u0161a Petejan, Manca Juvan and<\/span>\u00a0Ur\u0161ke Strle, is now providing a\u00a04-language subtitles: Slovene, Italian, English and Croatian.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

Events at the gallery stimulated the socially engaged approach in addressing historic events, war trauma and respect for victims of evil regimes.<\/span>\u00a0The program, which also attracted the attention of the media, was co-created by: curator Roberta Ba\u010di\u0107<\/a> of Textiles of Resistance: Women’s Voices, professor at the Faculty of Arts in Rijeka,\u00a0dr.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Vijeran<\/a>\u00a0Pavlakovi\u0107<\/a>\u00a0, Croatian peacekeeper\u00a0Goran<\/a>\u00a0Bo\u017ei\u010devi\u0107<\/a>\u00a0, director of Croatian\u00a0Documenta\u00a0Vesna Ter\u0161eli\u0107<\/a>\u00a0and with concluding event intervention of\u00a0Andrea Rokni\u0107 Be\u017eani\u0107<\/a>\u00a0historian at the Faculty of Arts, Rijeka, Dinko Tamarut, president of the Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists of Primorsko-Goranska County and co-author and the curator of the exhibition Last Witnesses\u00a0Sa\u0161a Petejan.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of the attention was devoted to the restoration of the memorial area of \u200b\u200bthe former Italian fascist camp in Kampor on the island of Rab, where mortality was very high, higher than in the Nazi camps.<\/span>\u00a0The majority of inmates in this camp where Slovenians and Croats. Part of the camp served a camp for Jews under Italian protection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The talks also included a proposal to host a photo-documentary exhibition The Last Witnesses in the town of\u00a0Rab.<\/span>\u00a0The idea of \u200b\u200bestablishing an educational\u00a0trail \u201cSchools of Peace – Paths of Peace\u201d was presented, which would include the memorial sites of Mrkopolje, Kampor on Rab and Goli otok.<\/span><\/p>\n
