Hosted as part of the\u00a0Rijeka 2020<\/a><\/strong>, European Capital of Culture, programm, the photographic-documentary exhibition\u00a0Last Witnesses\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>contributes to\u00a0the preservation of the historical memory of internment in Italian fascist camps for the sixth consecutive year.\u00a0The guests at the opening will be\u00a0last living witnesses\u00a0of the internment in years 1942 and 1943.<\/h5>\n

The Croatian exhibition opening is announced\u00a0on September 14, 2019\u00a0at the Principij Gallery<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Rijeka.<\/span>\u00a0While the focus of the exhibition is on survivors, their relatives and friends from Slovenia, while breaking through a politically\u00a0induced historic amnesia is crucial to the authors. As\u00a0the evil and the WWII war crimes of Mussolini’s Italy never got a judicial epilogue, survivors were exposed to injustice and oblivion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To this day, political successors in Italy have not apologized to the peoples of the former Yugoslavia and to other victims of Italian fascism.\u00a0<\/span>Meanwhile, the international community is just about to mature to a point, when it can recognize and acknowledge the evil of Mussolini’s fascism.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Last Witnesses, the memories of internment\u00a0in the fascist camps<\/a>, is part of an on-going collaborative project connecting Slovenia based journalist Sa\u0161a Petejan, photographer Mance Juven and historian dr.<\/span>\u00a0Ur\u0161ke Strle.<\/span>\u00a0The Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia<\/strong>\u00a0(MNZS)<\/a>\u00a0co-produced the first opening of the exhibition in September 2013. Since then, the exhibition has been regularly hosted, so far in Slovenia, in\u00a0Germany and Italy, and now in Croatia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rijeka opening is organized by the Croatian organization\u00a0Documenta<\/strong>\u00a0, Center for Dealing with the Past<\/a>\u00a0with associates, including the German\u00a0EVZ Foundation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0International Union for the Remembrance of the Holocaust (\u00a0IHRA<\/strong>\u00a0)<\/a>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n

The opening of the exhibition will be followed by training for Croatian teachers.<\/span>\u00a0The purpose is to approximate the historical memory of the\u00a0existence of italian fascism and the evil it caused to the peoples of the former Yugoslavia.\u00a0M<\/span>ultimedia educational materials will be handed out to teachers: a graphic novel by the Italian cartoonist David Toffol: L’inverno d’Italia<\/a><\/strong> (Italian Winter), a\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0interview with the artist and a witness produced by the APIS Institute,\u00a0along with a suggestion to use\u00a0non-formal learning methods.<\/span>\u00a0It is an experiential approach to learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the Institute APIS and MNZS, the co-producer of the exhibition is the Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (\u00a0ZRC SAZU<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0).<\/span>\u00a0In 2016, ZRC SAZU published a monograph\u00a0Guardians of the Spoon<\/a><\/strong>, which received\u00a0an award at the Slovenian Book Fair.<\/span><\/p>\n

A bilingual, Slovenian and English educational website, Guardians of the Spoon<\/a>, was also created.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For many years Sa\u0161a petejan\u00a0is active in international research and documentary projects on italian fascism including mapping, collecting archival documents, interviewing witnesses and producing educational content.<\/span><\/p>\n

A unique research project: D<\/strong>alle guerre nell’Africa alla Repubblica di Sal\u00f2<\/strong>, contains\u00a0an outstanding map<\/a>\u00a0and the most extensive digital collection of documents and testimonials on Italian fascism evil. It is\u00a0<\/span>available only in Italian but nonetheless of extreme international importance for the understanding of the WW2 events.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hosting in Croatia will continue in January.<\/span>\u00a0It is announced the opening of an exhibition on island of Rab. And there is more to\u00a0this historic memory preservation project:\u00a0an accessible application will be\u00a0 available to visitors of the memorial cemetery in Kampor.
