People should use their right to vote in democratic countries. After all, it\u2019s their voice and it should be heard. People who don\u2019t vote probably don\u2019t vote because they are ok with how things are or they are tired of not having their voice heard.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"european<\/a><\/p>\n

In the frame of Erasmus+ youth exchange <\/span>A European Dream<\/span><\/i>, organized by APIS Institute from Slovenia with partner organisations from the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey and Northern Ireland, 25 young people came together for 9 days to discuss their views on Europe and European Union, democracy, national and supranational identity, and citizenship.\u00a0<\/span>These are their opinions.<\/p>\n

What does being a European citizen mean to YOUNG PEOPLE? Do THEY feel like European citizens?<\/b><\/h3>\n

\u201c<\/span>European citizenship means enjoying all the benefits the EU provides to its citizens and at the same time being open-minded, socially conscious and aware of all the values that the EU is based on<\/span><\/i>.\u201c<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

Participants say that when it comes to political questions, they are more focused on their own country; they feel part of Europe as a cultural space, an ever greater family beyond their direct relations. This family offers freedom of self-expression. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Even as an immigrant I feel European because Europe is the only place where I can be the person I want to be<\/span><\/i>,\u201c\u00a0<\/span>says one of the participants.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

Europe symbolises unity and connection; young people say that their past, present and future are directly entangled with other Europeans, and that they, and their culture, are accepted and respected by the European community. To them, European citizenship means to act together for a purpose; specifying a vision and acting accordingly is the core of unity.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But there is frustration as well \u2013 especially for participants from Northern Ireland. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Northern Ireland, geographically, feels very excluded from Europe. And now with Brexit, I feel even less European. I love Europe and I want to be part of it, but I have very little choice in the future of my country\u2019s place in the EU,<\/span><\/i>\u201d says one participant. \u201c<\/span>Being an EU citizen to me means I have a second home outside of the UK – for now<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Positive results of the European Union and the advantages of being a European citizen<\/b><\/h3>\n

Among the positive effects of the EU, the participants list free movement of people and goods; ability to travel, work and study abroad; international exchanges; treaties on trade; support of science; education; social security; rule of law; stability; EU court; better healthcare; easier transfer of knowledge. Traveling abroad without a visa and open borders within the EU \u2013 the Schengen Treaty – are mentioned every time. Young people believe that by removing physical borders between nations, we can bridge the gap of ideological barriers between people too. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Open borders within the EU are an amazing privilege. Unrestricted travel makes it so much easier to learn about the world around us. Without that, I fear people may become narrow-minded and intolerant<\/span><\/i>,\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

says a Turkish participant, who needed two months to get a temporary Schengen visa. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Knowing that your state is under authority of another structure makes you feel more comfortable. Because if you know something is wrong, there is another authority to make it right<\/span><\/i>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>says another participant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The disadvantages of being a European citizen<\/b><\/h3>\n

Although young people appreciate the connection and interdependence of European member states, they are aware of its dangers too. They know that the instability of one government affects all EU members, and they are especially worried about smaller or \u2018unstable\u2019 nations losing their voice. The economic ideology keeps some of the countries really poor and there is little space for local and non-capitalist economies, they say. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As mentioned above, participants in general believe that if something is wrong, Europe is an authority that can intervene. But others are skeptical about this. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I believe that the EU is deciding for a lot of dubious legislation that the national parliaments can\u2019t really refuse (for instance TTIP),\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

says one participant; staying in a unity means that countries have to follow decisions even if people think they aren\u2019t right. This is deeply interwoven with integrity: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The EU should\u00a0recognize\u00a0and practice appreciated values more often \u2013 for example, the TTIP agreement, although not signed yet, is a shame\u00a0for EU.<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

Democracy is a word that pops up here and there, and participants spent a lot of time on the exchange discussing it. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I know that democracy is a prominent value, but that value sometimes feels like it is slowly disappearing<\/span><\/i>,\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

worries one of the participants, while others believe that democracy brings less equality, responsibility and accountability. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Sometimes we have to do something that we don\u2019t want \u2013 but it\u2019s solidarity<\/span><\/i>,\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Values that represent the EU in the opinion of participants of the E+ youth exchange \u2018A European Dream\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

What do young people think about people not using their political right to vote in the elections? What might be the reasons for not voting? how to increase youth participation in political and social processes\/events?<\/b><\/h3>\n

Participants agree that the main reasons for people not voting is that people don\u2019t believe in change anymore, that they don\u2019t see a direct cause-reaction connection between the EU and their daily lives, and that they are not educated well on political matters. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I understand if people don\u2019t vote because they are ill-informed and genuinely don\u2019t understand or know who they should vote for. But I think those people should be educated on the value of their vote, and how so many people in the world are denied this right.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

They don\u2019t believe that young people have much knowledge about politics; the government and schools need to do more to ensure that young people and teenagers know about politics and the importance of voting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I try to understand, but I still feel confused. Secondary school education did not cover European politics \u2013 neither in history, economics or politics<\/span><\/i>,\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

They might be skeptical about the current state of politics and the EU, but participants of the youth exchange are full of ideas on how to increase youth participation in political and social events & processes:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  • Experimental learning and non-formal education (NFE): young people criticized the education systems in Europe, emphasizing the importance of experiencing the importance of decision making and implementation via roleplay and other experimental modules, as well as traveling and exploring.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs): NGOs should be encouraged to inform youth and encourage them to explore and be willing to be part of these processes and events.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Voting rights: citizens should be allowed to vote from a younger age. One of the participants points out the issue of age-limit on vote: \u201c<\/span>Being 18 to vote is a big issue to me!\u201d<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Role models: political engagement of young people\u2019s idols would motivate young people to participate more; also, seeing them change things would make them more motivated as well.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • International exchanges: \u201c<\/span>Programmes like this are ideal. Very politically-minded youths and those who are less so are brought together to discuss with each other. Youth exchanges are a valuable opportunity for people to find their political voices.\u201d<\/span><\/i> Young people insist there should be more possibilities for youth to meet and exchange their views about the EU.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The media: there would have to be a more positive representation of \u2018being political\u2019 in the media. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Youth participation on local level: NGOs and municipalities should work together to increase the participation of young people.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Formal education: schools on all levels should teach more about politics, including voting and getting to know how the law works. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/p>\n

    But most importantly, they conclude: <\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201c<\/span>We have to show young people that their voice is important. That they are important. Making it more obvious that their voice is being heard will probably motivate young participants more than anything<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Young people finish the survey by brainstorming about how to activate citizens\u2019 interest and knowledge about practical political issues of the EU. What is missing, they repeat, is a direct connection between the EU and their lives. People should be shown how political discourse and decisions affect their lives in order to get more involved in decision processes. \u201c<\/span>I guess we must \u2018personalize\u2019 the problems – show the people how the problems affect them – and also show them an idea of political change that they can achieve or strive to achieve in the Union<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    But youth are getting involved in politics again, they believe. <\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201c<\/span>I feel that many youths are becoming involved in politics now, in the face of current political affairs,\u201d <\/span><\/i>said one of the participants.<\/span> \u201cTrump presidency, Brexit, French elections: fascism is a real threat again \u2013 fear more than anything should evoke interest in politics. We need to stop history repeating itself<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

     <\/p>\n

    The youth exchange was financed by Erasmus+ programme. After the exchange, young participants are excited and looking forward to the future; such exchanges bring youth together and make them feel more connected. <\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201c<\/span>I am now proud to say I am European. And I now feel that I am a European citizen,\u201d <\/span><\/i>writes one of the participants. \u201c<\/span>To be European means to value fundamental human rights, and to respect values of different cultures. I feel that everyone I met on this exchange is my\u00a0<\/span><\/i>neighbor<\/i>,\u201d says another.<\/p>\n

     <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    In their opinion, the importance of the Erasmus+ programme is to educate youth on the value of the EU, to learn their place within it, and to spark an interest in politics in those who didn\u2019t think about it before. To help young people realize their strength in changing the future of the EU and of their country.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201c<\/span>On the exchange we gained awareness, we learnt about cultures and saw that we are all the same. We opened our minds. For me, being a European citizen means that I respect the values of EU and I think that the only way for the future is solidarity<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
